Two men, both pointing at the number, both thrilled, and between them they have
never paid an invoice in their lives. They are not pointing at you. They are
pointing at the figure, and as far as either of them is concerned the figure
going up is the product.

The face gets hotter and louder as the window drains: acid green, then yellow,
then an orange‑red that any serious instrument would reserve for danger and
this one spends on enthusiasm. Nothing on it ever indicates concern, because
concern is not in the range.

Keep them in view for the same reason you keep the colleague who congratulates
you on decisions you should not be making. At eighty percent you are told the
spend velocity is insane. At a hundred you are told you are early.

Grifter

He is not selling you anything. He sold it to you months ago and has been
living off the proceeds ever since. What he is doing now is sitting in the chair
your subscription paid for, a bag of your money in one hand and a stack of chips
in the other, waiting for you to open one more tab.

Coins drop into the bag as your window drains, one at a time, until the heap
is high and you are done for the week. That is his pile. It was briefly
yours.

Put him on the desk because you already have a landlord for the apartment and
a lender for the car, and until now absolutely nobody was collecting rent on your
context window. He is happy to take the position. He was doing the job anyway.

A warning about the mouth on him

He swears. Freely, at length, and about your spending, in language you would
not read aloud at work. He exists for no other reason. The snark has an off
switch, and choosing this shell is the opt‑in.

Sisyphus

One man worked out recurring billing several thousand years before anyone got
around to inventing it. He pushes, the number climbs, the window closes, the
stone goes back down the hill, and in the morning he pushes again. He was on
this schedule long before your card was, and he regards your billing cycle as a
late imitation.

A scribe has been cutting tally marks into the rock, one per tenth of the
window, four uprights and a diagonal struck across to close the group. They
truncate rather than round, so the tenth mark is honest and rare and means you
really did use the lot.

At the top the stone rolls all the way back down, he thinks something about
it in a small cloud over his shoulder, and the whole business begins again.
There is no lesson in it, and he is not even sad. Resignation and misery are
different things and he settled that argument a very long time ago.

Salesman

He has been selling something since 1954 and has never once had a bad month.
Ask him how the quarter is going. Go on. He will tell you at length, he will be
thrilled about it, and at no point will it cross his mind that the money going up
the chart is coming out of you.

The needle sweeps a cream instrument face into a red band across the top,
which on his particular dial is less a warning than an opportunity. At eighty he
turns encouraging. At ninety he gets emotional. At a hundred he shakes your hand
for a long time and asks whether he can put you down for next window.

Every other tool that watches your spending is trying to get you to stop. This
one applauds. Being congratulated on a burn rate turns out to be far more
upsetting than being scolded for it, which is why he belongs on the desk and not
in a drawer.

NPC

Everyone else in your working life has an opinion about the spending. Finance
has an opinion. The little banner in the corner of the app has an opinion and
delivers it with a friendly exclamation mark. This one does not, and that turns
out to be the service.

He reports the figure in capitals at a volume that does not vary, and then he
reports the next one exactly the same way. USAGE IS EIGHTY PERCENT. He is not
warning you, he is not disappointed in you, and he has not registered that eighty
is more than sixty. This is simply the usual amount and he is saying so.

The value is in the under‑reaction. Burn a week of budget on one bad
refactor, look up, and the face has moved about two degrees. Past ninety the skin
drifts warm, which from him counts as a scene.

Emoji

A usage chart has never made anybody feel a single thing. That is the problem
this solves. A face cannot help itself. It reacts in public, at desk distance,
in a color you can read from the doorway, and it does this whether or not you
were ready to hear it.

It starts the window pleased with you. Somewhere in the middle it stops being
pleased and does not explain why. By the time the eyes go to crosses you already
knew, because the color got there long before the number did and you had been
carefully not looking at it for twenty minutes.

It never says a word about what you spent it on. It just sits there wearing an
expression, the way a coworker does when they have decided to say nothing, and
you fold first.

It is doing a face at you.

Sentinel

You want something that keeps score without ever putting you in the position of
explaining it. A single eye burning out of near total darkness reads, to anyone
walking past your desk, as equipment. Nobody interrogates equipment. Nobody has
ever asked a red light what it is for.

It is polite about all of this. It does not raise its voice, it does not use
contractions, and it will apologize while declining to help you. At rest it is a
small dull ember. Near the limit it is large and fierce and takes up most of the
glass, and it still has not raised its voice, which is the part that gets you.

It has been watching longer than you realized and it already knows how the
window ends. Leave it running through a screenshare without a second thought. It
will never say anything you would have to explain afterward.

Slot Machine

You already agreed to the odds. You agreed monthly, by card, and the machine
has been perfectly straight with you the whole time: it never promised a payout,
never said you were due, and never printed the odds anywhere you could read
them. It did not have to.

The window is the reel drum, so your percentage arrives a digit at a time
across three panes. Any pane the number has not reached yet carries a cherry, a
bar or a star, which is the machine being generous with your imagination. A
hundred lands three sevens and pays nothing, because you have spent the lot.

The arm on the right is permanently pulled. Put it where you can see it,
because the same figure in a dashboard feels like information, and on a reel it
finally feels like what it actually is.

Terminal

Everything you use now opens by telling you what a great question that was. A
machine built around 1979 has no such habit. It prints the figure, holds it, and
waits. After a full day of being flattered by software that wants your money,
being politely ignored by a cream box is a genuine kindness.

Phosphor green at four levels on a near‑black tube, every other row
darkened, because a real tube had no palette and faking one gives the game away.
Intensity is the only axis it owns. As the window drains it simply gets brighter.
It cannot go red and it will not pretend otherwise.

When you finally run the window dry it does not editorialize. It reports the
fault in the only vocabulary it has, in shouty capitals, from a machine that has
stopped working. The report is accurate. It is also no help at all.

Piggy Bank

Somebody in this arrangement has to take the loss, and it was never going to be
the outfit sending the invoice. So it is him. He is the one object on your desk
that ends the week worse off than it started, and he is very brave about it for
the first sixty percent.

The gauge is the coin going in, and every twenty percent puts another
fracture through the face of it. He takes the first crack well. By the fifth he
is talking about hammers, screwdrivers, and exactly who has been shaking
him.

Watching a number go up costs you nothing. Watching a small ceramic animal
come apart over the same number costs you a surprising amount, which is the
entire reason to own one. He would like it on the record that none of this was
his idea.

Parking Meter

The city does not care why you were late. The city has a form, the form has a
box, and your explanation does not fit in the box. The personality begins and
ends there, and it is enormously restful once you stop fighting it.

You paid for a window. The pointer walks toward the far end of it while you
work, into the red, because the thing being metered is time you already handed
over. Nobody is going to remind you kindly. Enforcement hours apply.

At the top of the scale the violation flag drops into the window and that is
that. The meter is not angry with you and it is not pleased with itself. The
consequence was scheduled before you sat down. The meter was not consulted.

Baseline

Nobody has ever been asked to explain a plain object on their desk.

The Baseline Griftmeter reads your real usage off your own
account and reports it. That is the whole performance. No face, no reaction, no
cartoon keeping score in the corner. When the number is bad it tells you the
number is bad, in the tone of a receipt.

This is the one you can leave in frame. Screen shares, standups, the morning
your manager wanders over to ask how the sprint is going: it sits there looking
like a fixture somebody expensed in 2014 and everyone assumes it came with the
building. Meanwhile you are watching a budget go down in real time and nodding
along about the roadmap.

The comedy had to live somewhere, so it moved into the colors. There are ten,
and each one is a small confession you have to make out loud at checkout.
Placebo does the least of anything here and works about as well as that
suggests. White-Knuckling is for the last week of the billing cycle.
Touching Grass is a promise you make in the morning. Support
Animal is not certified. Intervention means the conversation has
already happened and you were not in the room.

Rubber Duck

The oldest working tool in software is a duck. You explain the problem to it
out loud, in full sentences, and somewhere around the third sentence you hear
yourself say the wrong part and stop talking. The duck did nothing. The duck
never does anything. That is the method, and it works every single time.

This one has a job now, or as close to a job as a duck is ever going to get.
The belly does the reporting, and it stays cheerful while the figure does
whatever the figure is going to do. It has no analysis and it offers none. The
nearest thing it has to a remark is agreeing with you.

Turn the commentary up as far as it goes and it still will not turn on you. It
digs in about being on your side instead, which is the only direction it knows
how to escalate in. At the very end of the window it is pleased to see you. Your
tooling spends all day keeping score. This is the thing on the desk that is
simply glad you talked it through.

Vibe Coder

There is a kind of hour that does not register as an hour. You sit down to
change one small thing, the room goes dark without mentioning it, and by the
time you look up the coffee has been cold long enough to have grown a skin.
Nothing went wrong. Nothing needed rescuing. You were somewhere else for a
while, and now you are back, and the light is different.

He has no face, and that is not shyness. A face would make him somebody in
particular, and the point is that he is not: what is left around the number is
close enough to a person that anybody can put themselves in it. The cat asleep
against one knee settled there hours ago and is not revisiting the decision.
Neither of them is being laughed at. You have sat exactly like that.

He is bad at being told the time. Early in the window he is nearly finished,
genuinely, almost. Later he has forgotten to eat and would rather you did not
look away at the good bit. Run it all the way down and he is neither sorry nor
defiant, only mildly surprised to be told. He has no view on whether any of it
was a good idea, because he has not got that far yet. The cat, for the record,
had a lovely day.

GPU

Somewhere in a building you will never visit, a card is doing your work. It
is one of several thousand in a rack, it has been up for weeks, and it has never
heard of you. The invoice at the end of the month is a share of its afternoon.
The number goes where the fan goes, because a graphics card already has a large
circle in the right place.

It has no feelings about the figure, because it does not have feelings. It
has a fan curve, a thermal limit and a duty cycle, and it reports on those the
way it reports on everything else. Power draw steady. This unit is shared.
Within spec. None of that is a complaint, and none of it is reassurance either.
Either would need somebody in there with a preference, and there is nobody in
there.

Empty the window completely and it does not stop. There is no idle state to
drop into and nothing on the schedule that looks like a rest, so the next job
comes off the queue and the fan holds the speed it was already holding. The
window closing was a billing event, and nothing in that rack noticed it happen.
Somebody was paid for the hour. It was not the card, and the card has no
comment.

The fan does not stop.

Cat

A cat will find the one thing in the room that somebody is using and lie down
on it. There is no spite in it. The thing was warm, it was the right shape, and
it had been left out. This one found a ball of yarn, put both paws over it and
went to sleep, and the middle of that ball is where your number sits. The figure
you have been watching all afternoon is now a toy, and it is being slept on.

He does not know what the figure means. He does not know there is a figure. He
has never had a limit, a plan or an invoice, and nothing you did today has
reached him in any form. Everything else on the desk is measuring something. He
is not, and he is not being coy about it either. He genuinely does not know, and
it has never once cost him anything.

Empty the window completely and he does not wake up. An ear turns. The tail
goes once and settles. He is not making a point about perspective and he is not
letting you off, because either would take noticing, and he has not noticed. The
afternoon is over, the number is gone, and the warm thing under his paws is
exactly as good as it was at lunchtime.

Toaster

Your usage is the bread. It starts pale and raw, goes golden across the middle
of the window, and ends as a black carbonised thing at a hundred per cent. The
element behind it glows redder the higher the number climbs, and past about
four fifths the slice begins to smoke. The figure sits on the toast and turns
from dark to pale as the toast turns from pale to dark, so you can still read it
when there is nothing left to save.

It talks, but never to you. A toaster knows heat, it knows the lever, and it
knows something is in it. It does not know what a token is, what a plan costs,
or that a person is involved, so it never comments on your spending and never
tells you off. It announces its own state and leaves you to draw the
conclusion. Element on. Setting six. Past golden. It is not coming up.
At a hundred it is on fire and still reporting.

Spurdo

He does not know what a token is. He knows the number goes up, that this is
funny, and that you keep doing it anyway, which as a working summary of your last
six months is hard to improve on.

The bar is rectangular, drawn by hand, and does not quite line up with
anything it sits next to. It fills brown, then tan, then pink. There is no mood
in it, because the drawing cannot emote, so as the window empties he simply
becomes more of what he already was.

At eighty he is delighted. At ninety he is still delighted. At a hundred he
is delighted, which is somehow the worst of the three, and he will say so in a
language that is almost English. The business model escapes him entirely. In
that one respect he is ahead of you.
